How Does it Change Over Time?
Climate change keeps changing as the temperatures increase. Since 1880 ,the average global temperature on Earth has increased by a little more than 1° Celsius, or 2° Fahrenheit. This might not seem like much, but if the entire Earth warms 1 or 2 degrees, it is a lot! Here are some facts you should know about climate change as it changes over time:
•global temperature records begin around 1880 because observations did not sufficiently cover enough of the planet before that time
•carbon dioxide levels have increased by about 413 parts per million
•global temperatures have increased by about 1.9 degrees Fahrenheit since 1880
•sea levels are rising 3.3 mm each year
•the arctic ice minimum has decreased by 12.85 % per decade
•polar ice sheets have lost 427 Gigatonnes per year
• the average temperature across global land and ocean surfaces was 1.71°F above the 20th average of 57.0°F in 2019, making it the second-warmest year on record
•19 of the 20 warmest years on record have occurred since 2001
• arctic summer sea ice shrank to the lowest amount on record in 2012
